Where the Whole System Actually Works (Or Doesn't)

Your gutters can be perfect — pitched right, sealed tight, freshly cleaned — and you'll still end up with water in the basement if the downspouts are wrong. Undersized, disconnected, dumping right next to the foundation, or clogged at the elbow. Every Capital Region basement leak we trace back ends at a failed downspout, not at the gutter.

We install new downspouts, replace failed ones, add extensions to push water further from the foundation, and route the whole system underground when the lot demands it. Every job includes a written summary of what we found and what we did, so you actually know your system is working — not just hoping.

Failed Downspouts vs Properly Routed Downspouts

A disconnected or undersized downspout is the difference between a dry basement and a wet one. Here's the side-by-side of what a real downspout job changes the first time it rains.

Failed Downspouts

Problem
Failed Capital Region downspout dumping water at the foundation
  • Water dumps right at the foundation every time it rains
  • Undersized 2″ × 3″ can't handle Capital Region storm volume
  • Disconnected elbows let water leak behind the siding
  • Foundation cracks, basement leaks, and mold within a season
  • Yard washouts and erosion at the discharge point

Properly Routed

Protected
Properly routed downspout system with extension directing water away from the foundation
  • Water lands 4–6 feet from the foundation, every time
  • 3″ × 4″ profile moves Capital Region storm runoff cleanly
  • Sealed elbows and brackets — no leaks behind siding
  • Dry basement, sound foundation, stable yard grade
  • Underground routing available when the lot demands it

Oleg was great to work with, I was late this year to get the gutters cleaned and we worked it out to come when the weather broke. He communicated well and showed up when he said he would. Thank you for the professional service.

Very fair price, high quality materials, fast install on a recently purchased house. Responded to the email inquiry quickly and got the job done to the requested specs. More than pleased with the work. It's really nice to deal with a no nonsense contractor. Highly recommended.

Oleg and his work crew fixed my gutters which were coming off because of lose nails in the fascia. Oleg called me back right away, was prompt, professional, and did the job correctly. His price was reasonable and he and his crew were efficient. Oleg and crew are dependable when most bigger contractors turn you away because they don't want to deal with the smaller jobs anymore.

We had a great experience. They replaced and added gutters to our home. Checked for leakage under siding and replaced flashing as needed. Quick response, reasonably priced, honest, and cleaned up all materials. The owner even helped trouble shoot an issue and advised how we can do the job ourselves and save some money. Will def use him again and recommend to others!

Awesome work completed by Oleg! His quote was fair, he fit me into his schedule just before another major rainstorm, showed up on time, completed the job quickly and professionally, and the seamless gutters are excellent quality. He cleaned up thoroughly afterward, and everything was installed perfectly. I 100% recommend him for any gutter work in the Capital District region!

Downspout FAQs

How many downspouts does my Albany home actually need?+
Rule of thumb: one downspout per 30–40 linear feet of gutter, more if your roof has steep pitches or high-volume areas like dormer valleys. A typical Capital Region home with 150–180 ft of gutter usually needs 3–4 downspouts. We size based on your specific roof area at the on-site quote.
2″ × 3″ or 3″ × 4″ — which downspout size?+
For most Capital Region homes today, 3″ × 4″. It moves roughly 2x the water of the older 2″ × 3″ profile, handles Capital Region storm volume without overflowing at the outlet, and clogs less often. We default to 3″ × 4″ with 6″ gutters unless the house has architectural reasons to keep 2″ × 3″.
How much does it cost to replace a downspout?+
A standard 2″ × 3″ replacement on a single-story home typically runs $85–$120. A 3″ × 4″ replacement runs $110–$170. Two-story access adds 15–20%. The estimator above gives you a number based on your specific project, then we confirm with a free on-site quote.
What's a downspout extension and do I need one?+
An extension is the piece that carries water 4–6 feet (or more) away from the foundation after it leaves the downspout. If your downspout dumps right at the foundation today, you need one. Above-ground flexible extensions run $35 each. Concrete splash blocks are $25. Underground PVC routing is $35–$45 per linear foot trenched and is the right answer when the lot grade or landscaping demands it.
Can you route my downspouts underground?+
Yes. We use 4″ smooth-wall PVC with sealed fittings, trenched to a safe discharge point — either a pop-up emitter at the lot edge, an existing french drain, or a dry well. Pricing depends on trench length, soil conditions, and any obstacles (utilities, mature trees, hardscape). We mark utilities and pull permits where required.
Why does my downspout keep disconnecting at the elbow?+
Usually one of three things: the original installer used pop rivets instead of properly sealed screw connections, the elbow profile doesn't match the downspout profile, or the brackets that hold the downspout to the siding have failed. We fix the root cause — not just re-attach a doomed joint.
Do you handle foundation drainage hookups?+
Yes — we tie downspouts into existing french drains and dry wells, and we can install new french drains paired with new downspouts when the foundation needs it. If you're seeing basement water, the downspouts and foundation drainage system have to be diagnosed together — we walk both at the quote.
How long does a downspout install or replacement take?+
Single-downspout replacement: usually under an hour. Full set of 3–4 new downspouts on a single-story home: half a day. A full system with underground routing or french drain tie-in: one to two days depending on trench length and soil conditions. We confirm the schedule at the quote.
Do you offer a warranty?+
Yes. Workmanship on downspout work is guaranteed for 5 years — covers joints, brackets, downspout fasteners, and underground PVC connections. The downspout material itself carries the manufacturer's finish warranty (20 years on aluminum). Written warranty included with every install.
What areas do you serve for downspout work?+
The full Capital Region — Albany, Saratoga Springs, Clifton Park, Latham, Niskayuna, Watervliet, Cohoes, Round Lake, Malta, Ballston Spa, Guilderland, Troy, Rensselaer, Mechanicville, and the smaller towns in between. If you're inside the Albany metro and we can reach you in a day, we can quote you.
